Master of Arts
What's Your Master Plan?
As the Department's flagship graduate program, the Master of Arts in Economics provides rigorous training in economic theory, quantitative methods, and applied research—equipping students for a broad range of opportunities in the most competitive of academic and professional settings.
The program begins with two semesters of coursework. Emphasis is on technical skills needed to challenge conventional ways of thinking and support evidence-based decision-making. After completing this coursework, students continue along one of three program options: essay, thesis, or co-operative internship. Each route is tailored to different goals and interests.
This option is designed to be completed in as little as twelve months. It involves the completion of a course-based research essay during the third semester, under the guidance of an expert faculty member.
The essay must represent original research, typically with an applied or empirical focus. However, it is not expected to be as comprehensive as a thesis.
We offer competitive financial support to many of our graduate students in this program. You are automatically considered for funding at the time of application—no separate application is required.
This option is intended for students who plan to pursue doctoral studies. It involves a more substantial piece of original research than the essay and typically requires two to three semesters of work to complete.
Direct admission to the thesis option is rare. Students are encouraged to apply to the essay option, and those who perform exceptionally well may apply to transfer into the thesis stream. Two years of competitive financial support may be available for students in this program option.
This program option is forthcoming. We anticipate admitting the first cohort of students to the internship option in Fall 2026.
This option includes a one-semester paid internship coordinated through the Co-operative Education Office. Students complete the work term in the third semester of the program instead of writing an essay.
An internship is ideal for students who intend to work in a professional, non-research setting to gain valuable experience. Entry into this option is competitive and selective. Students who apply to this stream but are not admitted will be automatically considered for admission to the essay option. Competitive financial support is available and considered automatically for all applicants.
