Assistant Professor in Life Sciences Pedagogy
The Department of Biochemistry invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in Teaching and Learning in the Life Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program in science education, and will be expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate teaching in the core curriculum of the Department (i.e., biochemistry, nutrition), as well as supervision of research students. The successful candidate is also expected to help lead the Department’s continuous development of programming using evidence-based approaches.
Applicants should have a graduate degree in life sciences or related field, and a PhD in either life sciences or post-secondary education.

The Teaching Dossier (three pages) should include a teaching philosophy and demonstrate potential for teaching excellence, as evidenced by (but not limited to): teaching experiences at any level including laboratory instruction; experience with course and curriculum development; documented examples of research in pedagogy; training in leading and emerging teaching practices; experience with technology enhanced learning; experience with experiential learning methods; strong teaching evaluations; teaching awards; or any other relevant achievements in teaching. Candidates may append up to five examples of such evidence to their Dossier (e.g. sample syllabi, publications, participation in student or public outreach promoting science education, etc.).
The Research Proposal must be grounded in teaching and learning in the life sciences demonstrating the potential to be both independent and externally funded. The candidate’s proposal should demonstrate their priorities for innovation in teaching and learning in the context of the programs offered by the Department of Biochemistry. The area of research is not restricted and is at the candidate’s discretion. Some examples include (but are not limited to): enhanced student learning experiences; knowledge training techniques; assessment design;
technology-enhanced labs; curriculum design; educational leadership training; active learning in life sciences; threshold concepts; indigenization and decolonization of life sciences curricula; designing and evaluating learning experiences that enhance the success of equity-deserving students; developing life sciences teaching resources for K-12 education; increasing life sciences accessibility to the general public.
The Department of Biochemistry currently offers undergraduate degree programs in both Biochemistry and Nutrition, as well as a robust graduate program. The successful applicant’s position is a cornerstone of the Department’s strategic plan to provide world-class, inclusive education in the life sciences. The successful applicant will help steer our ongoing curriculum revision and program development, ensuring that it is consistent with current evidence of pedagogical best practices for educating science students in the classroom, laboratory, and community settings.
The strategic focus of the Department of Biochemistry is on the role of nutrition and biochemistry in human health and disease. The Department is in an active phase of faculty renewal and moved to a new state-of-the-art facility in 2021. Memorial University has a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and teaching.
