SUBJECT: Students prepare for business trip of a lifetime

DATE: Feb. 17

Four students from Memorial University’s Faculty of Business Administration are gearing up for their biggest business trip yet. The students will be participating in the championship round of the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) case competition to be held in Rennes, France from Feb. 20-25.

Memorial’s team is comprised of bachelor of commerce (co-operative) students Steve Norris (St. John’s), Stephanie Hillier (Mt.Pearl), John Whelan (Placentia) and Lisa Beck (St. Lawrence) and coaches Dr. Alex Faseruk and Carol King. The team will compete against students from BI-Norwegian School of Management, Norway; Bishop's University, Canada; Groupe ESCRennes, France; Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland; Helsinki School of Economics, Finland; Concordia University, Canada; and University of Northern Iowa, USA.

“Competing at NIBS allows me to couple an international experience with my business education,” said Lisa Beck. “Being a part of the team is the culmination of five years of my business education at Memorial. I am looking forward to being a part of Memorial’s reputation as a fierce international competitor."

“The NIBS competition is an amazing learning experience in so many ways from the training period here at home leading up to departure, to the competition itself and a week of intense togetherness,” said assistant coach Carol King. ”With teams from Europeand North America participating there is an experiential level of cultural understanding and business problem solving which is unique in life.”

NIBS was established in 1993 to bring together business schools from around the world who believe the globalization of the economy is essential to the evolution of managerial practices. The goal of the competition is to promote cross-cultural awareness and give students an opportunity to explore international business issues. Memorial has participated in the competition since 1996 and its teams have won four times: 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2003. In 2004, Memorial hosted the international competition.
