SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold Dec. 6 vigil

Students, staff, faculty and friends will pause and reflect during a special ceremony on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus Friday, Dec. 6.
Each year, the university commemorates the tragic anniversary of the 1989 Montreal Massacre. Fourteen women were killed because of their gender at l’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Que.
The anniversary coincides with the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada.
This year is the 24th anniversary of the tragedy. The vigil will be held in EN-2006 in the S.J. Carew (Engineering) building. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a small reception in the main foyer.
This year’s event will include a candlelight procession of 14 Memorial students who will represent the lives of the women who were lost.
Kim Kelly, School of Social Work, will emcee the event.
Dr. Greg Naterer, dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, will speak. Guest speaker Charlene Johnson, provincial minister responsible for the Status of Women, will give a keynote address.
Dedications will be offered by students, staff, faculty and community organizations. The Suncor Quartet, a string quartet comprised of students from the School of Music master’s program, will perform.
Representatives from community organizations across the city have been invited to attend and display booth/tables highlighting their work toward ending violence against women.
The vigil is organized annually by Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Office and Department of Gender Studies.
Free parking is available in area 60 located beneath the Alexander Murray (Earth Sciences) building.
