SUBJECT: Naval combat cadets graduate from Memorial’s Marine Institute

The Royal Canadian Navy and the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland will congratulate 52 new electro-mechanical engineers and electronics engineers into the ranks as they graduate from the Naval Combat Systems Technician Training Plan (NCSTTP) on Saturday, Jan.12.
The graduation will take place at 2 p.m. at the Canadian Forces Station St. John’s Drill Hall in Pleasantville.
Attending the graduation ceremony will be Rear Admiral David Gardam, commander Joint Task Force Atlantic and commander Maritime Force Atlantic; Commander David Benoit, commandant of the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School (CFNES); and CFNES Detachment Commander Alan Brown.
The province continues to maintain a strong representation within the navy, with 16 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians entering the fleet. Graduates will be posted to either Halifax or Esquimalt for further naval training.
The NCSTTP is a co-operative venture between the Canadian Forces and the Marine Institute. The NCSTTP trains technicians in the field of electronic and electro-mechanical engineering. The graduates began their studies at the Marine Institute in January 2011 and have completed two years of intense studies. They will now move on to join in the navy as productive weapons engineering technicians.
The relationship between the Department of National Defence and the Marine Institute has been an enormous success for both organizations since its establishment in 1992. With each passing year, more and more naval trainees complete their technical training at the institute and continue on to successful careers in the navy. On average, approximately 100 naval trainees are studying at the Marine Institute throughout the year.
