REF NO.: 65

SUBJECT: Memorial University to recognize fifth annual International Data Privacy Day

DATE: January 28, 2013

Memorial University is recognizing International Data Privacy Day on Friday, Feb. 1, with two free events open to all members of the university community and the general public.
Memorial is joining the effort to promote privacy awareness along with many international organizations, companies, educational institutions, government entities and municipalities across the globe.
“We want to participate in and support Data Privacy Day events because it is an opportunity to let our community and the public know that we take our privacy responsibilities seriously,” said Dr. Wardlaw, provost and vice-president (academic) who will deliver welcoming remarks at the start of the day.
The morning session will be a half-day symposium titled The Cloud and You. The symposium will feature two expert presentations examining different aspects of cloud computing – the use of remote services hosted on the Internet to store and use information.
“People are increasingly storing their information in the cloud, so they would benefit from a better understanding of what that means for their privacy,” said Rosemary Thorne, Memorial’s privacy officer with the Information Access and Privacy Protection Office.
The afternoon session will be a presentation titled Anatomy of a Privacy Breach: Attack on the Faculty of Business Administration Website. Dr. Larry Bauer, Memorial’s associate dean (academic programs) in the Faculty of Business Administration, will discuss an incident this past summer where unauthorized access to the faculty’s website by an unknown party was discovered and what the faculty did about it to protect the confidential information of students, faculty, staff and clients.
While both events are free and open to all members of the university community and the public, registration is required for the morning session where space is limited. Register early and no later than Monday, Jan. 28. Registration is not required for the afternoon session.
For a full schedule of events including times and locations, please visit Memorial’s Information Access and Privacy Protection Office website at www.mun.ca/iapp.
Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008, as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. The day commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Memorial University has participated in Data Privacy Day activities since 2009.
In addition to marking International Data Privacy Day each year, Memorial University is also a Data Privacy Day champion. Champions of Data Privacy Day recognize that individuals, organizations, business and governments all share the responsibility to be aware of privacy responsibilities and ways to reduce privacy risks. More information about Data Privacy Day champions can be found at www.staysafeonline.org/data-privacy-day/landing/.
