SUBJECT: High school students compete in Marine Institute’s inaugural model boat race

High school students from the Eastern School District will come to the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland on Saturday, May 12, for the Marine Institute’s first ever model boat race competition.
The competition takes place at the Marine Institute’s flume tank. The media and general public are invited to attend.
Students from seven high schools will demonstrate their skills in building an operational ship model, applying physics and mathematical principles and competitively race their vessel in the institute’s flume tank.
Teams will design and build their own original vessel hull and rudder. Teams are also required to provide calculation sheets, a design booklet and a poster board display, introducing their team and explaining their vessel design.
“Canada is entering a new era in shipbuilding with almost $30 billion going towards designing and building 30 ships over the next 30 years,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “It’s a time when ship designers can have a career working for a lifetime on these contracts alone. This is a prime opportunity to introduce high school students to careers in naval architecture and marine engineering systems design through this competition.”
The competition takes place from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Marine Institute flume tank. The awards ceremonies begin at 2:30 p.m. in Hampton Hall.
Schools taking part in the event include Ascension Collegiate, Bishops College, Carbonear Collegiate, Crescent Collegiate, O’Donel High School, Queen Elizabeth Regional High School and Roncalli Central High.
The competition is supported by the provincial Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.
