The League of Artists of Western Newfoundland (LAWN) and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery are very pleased to announce that Robinsons artist Reed Weir is the winner of the Madeline English Purchase Award.
Established to honour the life of Madeline English, the award provided the funds for the Grenfell College Art Gallery to purchase a work from LAWN’s Third Annual Juried Exhibition, currently on display in the art gallery. Reed’s artwork was selected from the exhibition, which features the work of 34 artists province-wide.
“Madeline English (1921-2009) was a strong supporter of the arts in the region and an artist in her own right. She was an active participant in choral and arts groups,” said Charlotte Jones, director of the gallery. “She is remembered in the arts community of western Newfoundland as a person who understood the importance of encouraging others to develop their own style and artistic path.”
Reed Weir graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1985. She moved to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1991 where she and her husband, Brian Banfield, established a clay studio in Robinsons. Her work has been seen in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Japan and Europe. She has received many grants and awards for her work, most recently the EVA Large Year Award from Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador and the Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Craft from the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. Weir’s clay sculpture is included in such public collections as Mount Saint Vincent University, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Burlington Art Centre.
“I am privileged to have one of my sculptures selected to become the Madeline English Purchase Award as part of the permanent collection at Grenfell College,” said Ms. Weir. “The creation of this award illuminates the importance of culture in our lives. I hope the award both delivers that message to students of today and the future and serves as a lasting tribute to Madeline English.”
League of Artists of Western Newfoundland was established in 2004 by Tina Dolter and Audrey Feltham, two graduates of the visual arts degree program at Grenfell College. LAWN is a non-profit artist run association which supports and promotes artists living in Western Newfoundland and the enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts in the region.
