SUBJECT: Memorial University kicks up its heels at annual fall celebrations

From Oct. 27-31, Memorial University of Newfoundland will hold MUNdays, its yearly fall celebrations. Media representatives are invited to the official launch on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. on the St. John’s campus and in the Arts and Science Building for a Brown Bag Breakfast at 8 a.m. in Corner Brook.
On the St. John’s campus, events fall under the banner of I Love MUNdays. I Fell for Grenfell takes place on the university’s west coast campus at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.
A variety of events ranging from a Battle of the Rock Bands dueling it out on the popular music video game to the annual charity truck pull to the international parade of flags will take place during the week.
MUNdays highlights the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community spirit that distinguish Memorial as one of the best post-secondary institutions in the world.
A full slate of events and activities are planned, encouraging students, staff, faculty and alumni to come together and celebrate Memorial.

           I Love MUNdays launch
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 10:30 a.m., St. John’s, University Centre, third floor
Join students, faculty and staff for a rowdy kick-off to this year’s activities.
           International Parade of Flags
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 11:15 a.m.-12 p.m., St. John’s, starts at University Centre, third floor. International student representatives will march through campus with their countries’ flags held high with enthusiasm and pride.
           Battle of the Sexes and Out Move Sammy the Sea-Hawk challenge
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 6-7 p.m., Field Hall, St. John’s
A night of sports, competition and fun where men and women Sea-Hawks battle it out in a variety of physical and mental skill-testing events, followed by an exhibition basketball game to decide the ultimate winners. At half time, residence house mascots show off their dance moves. This year, Sammy the Sea-Hawk unveils a new look.
           Rant Like Rick finals
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 3:30-4 p.m., St. John’s, The Landing, University Centre Room 3018
Memorial crowns its best loudmouth from 10 student finalists – 9 from St. John’s and one from Corner Brook.
           International Bazaar
Thursday, Oct. 29, 12-3 p.m., St. John’s, The Landing, University Centre, Room 3018
Taste your way around the world. This year’s bazaar will include a marketplace of world music, tastes, sights and sounds.
           Fly a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)
Thursday, Oct. 29, 3-4:30 p.m., Marine Institute Flume Tank/Viewing Gallery, St. John’s.
Remotely operated vehicle experts will demonstrate how to pilot an ROV for adventurous participants and then set them off on a series of challenges.
 
           Battle of the Rock Bands
Thursday, Oct. 29, 7-9 p.m., The Breezeway, University Centre, St. John’s
Ever play the music video game Rock Band? If you have, you’ve never played it like this. Students will take the concept very seriously and play – and dress – for rock ‘n’ roll campus history at their local watering hole.
           MUNdays Idle Free
Friday, Oct. 30, all day, St. John’s campus
Volunteers will encourage motorists to be kind to the environment (and to their wallets!) by turning off their engines while waiting.
           Sixth Annual Barnes House Charity Truck Pull
Saturday, Oct. 31, 1 p.m., Area 15, St. John’s campus
Students and employees will join forces to pull a massive vehicle in record time to help raise money for Iris Kirby House.
 
In Corner Brook:
           Healthy Start Brown Bag Breakfast
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 8-10:30 a.m., lobby of the Arts and Science building, Corner Brook
Begin I Fell for Grenfell with a belly full of complimentary healthy food.
           Qi Gong
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Arts and Science gymnasium, Corner Brook. Explore the ancient Chinese art of Qi Gong to balance the body, mind and spirit.
           Introduction to Belly Dancing
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 7-8 p.m., gymnasium, Arts and Science building, Corner Brook. Belly dancing embraces everybody, size and age. 
           Pie the Prof

Watch professors get pied to raise money for the John Ashton Bursary Fund and the campus food bank.

           Mystery of the Grey Lady

           Spooktacular TGIF (Thank God I Fell) Costume Contest and Social
Friday, Oct. 30, 3-5 p.m., GCSU Backlot, Corner Brook
Faculty, students and staff showcase their spectacular Halloween spirit.
           Teddy Bear Clinic
Saturday, Oct. 31, 12:30-2 p.m., Fine Arts atrium, Corner Brook
Students from the Western Regional School of Nursing give Teddy his check-up. Games, prizes, loot bags and fun.
