SUBJECT: From competition to connection- entrepreneurial networking guru visits Memorial

On Wednesday, June 9, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., in room A-1043, in the Arts and Administration Building, June Holley, founder of the Appalachian Centre for Economic Networks (ACEnet) and coordinator of entrepreneurship networks across the United States, will present a free, public workshop as part of the Harris Centre’s ongoing public policy education series.
Ms. Holley believes the art of making strong connections is a must-have skill for entrepreneurs and regional developers. She’s been teaching, and facilitating, the fine art of network weaving for 25 years, encouraging individuals all around the world to collaborate and innovate together.
According to Ms. Holley, “a Network Weaver is someone who is aware of the networks around them and explicitly works to make them healthier (more inclusive, bridging divides). Network Weavers do this by connecting people strategically where there’s potential for mutual benefit, helping people identify their passions, and serving as a catalyst for self-organizing groups.”
In this interactive session, Ms. Holley will explain how creating strong networks, even between businesses and non-profit organizations who view each other as potential competitors, can have a significant impact on operational success. These successes can then go on to make an impact at the regional level, strengthening local economies, fostering innovation, and supporting business retention and attraction.
Of particular relevance here in Newfoundland and Labrador is Ms. Holley’s experience with Regional Flavour Strategies, which bring together entrepreneurs and supporting organizations involved in tourism, local foods, artisans, and entertainment, to create economic growth through supportive linked industries.
In addition to discussing Regional Flavour Strategies, she will explain the key elements of successful entrepreneurship networks and offer a step by step approach to setting up networks that work.
