Michelle Maloney, executive director of Humber Education Alliance (HEA), is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Holly Pike as chairperson of the HEA’s board of directors, effective Sept. 1, 2008.
The appointment comes as a result of the departure of Dr. Adrian Fowler, professor of English at Memorial University’s Corner Brook campus, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Dr. Fowler has served on the Board since 1998, and has been HEA’s Chair since 2002. He remains a member of Grenfell College’s English faculty.
Dr. Pike has been a member of Grenfell’s faculty since 1987, and during that time has held a variety of administrative posts. She is an associate professor in the English program and is currently the acting principal of Grenfell College.
Current members of Humber Education Alliance’s Board of Directors include: Holly Pike, acting principal, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (chair); Jim Pink, international student co-ordinator, Western School District (secretary/treasurer); Perry Bingle, executive director, Humber Economic Development Board (member); Arch Hutchings, director, international division, Department of Education (governmental advisory member).
This year Humber Education Alliance continues to make great strides in the business of international education, with several new initiatives that involve capturing a segment of the English as a Second Language market. In addition, the organization continues to move beyond its traditional role by forging partnerships with several private sector local businesses.
The Humber Education Alliance was incorporated in April 2002 as a not-for-profit economic development program. HEA is a partnership between the Western School District, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, the Humber Economic Development Board and several private sector companies including Cycle Solutions, Marble Zip Tours, My Newfoundland Adventures and Le Ski Doux. The goals of HEA include the joint development and marketing of educational products and services offered on the west coast of Newfoundland, specifically the recruitment of international students.
