This year’s Student Achievement Awards saw students receive academic books, plaques and cash prizes presented by faculty members and prize donors. The award for outstanding student of the year is called the Arthur M. Sullivan Cup; it is awarded to a student who is strong academically and is very involved in student life and student government. This year’s winner was Katelyn Turner.
Over the past two years, Ms. Turner has been involved with a number of student committees and projects, often at the leadership level. These have included Roteract, I Fell for Grenfell activities, Spread the Net fundraising (to provide protective sleeping nets for children in Africa), and the Ghana Project (to provide school uniforms and materials for children in Ghana).
Ms. Turner also worked at the college pool, as a peer tutor and as a chalet adviser this year, and took part in Grenfell’s first ever Student Leadership Program.
2009 Student Leadership Program
The Student Leadership Program works to foster an understanding among students of the importance of student leaders, to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and to provide students with the resources needed to become better leaders. The program encompasses five key components, including a one-day student leadership conference; an experiential learning component requiring students to complete volunteer hours on and off campus; a winter workshop focusing on motivation; a service learning component requiring small groups of students to work with not-for-profit organizations in the community; and a reflective learning component so students could reflect on their learning through the program.
Participants in the 2009 program were Alice Will, Bruce Smith, Catlin Veinot, Maria Burn, Chris Read, Melissa Squarey, Dan Monafu, Nikita Noseworthy, Danielle Smith, Nyasha Musandu, Gillian Fowlie, Pamela Pope, Jaclyn Mercer, Stephanie Coombes, Janet Man, Lisa Parmiter, Jasmine Veinot, Kathryn Rehse, Jennifer Hartley, Katelyn Corbett and Justin Coombs.
Academic Prizes
Academic prizes were awarded to Nikita Noseworthy, Duncan A. Ferguson Prize in Psychology; Loni Slade, The Brothers & Simms of Clairca Psychology Book Prize; Carolynn Gabriel, Classics Merit Award and The Joanne Swan Greenlee Prize in Historical Studies; Lindsay Morey, The Pausanias Scholarship in Classics for Study Abroad; Brad Evoy, The Palliser Prize in History; Josh Tavenor, Historical Studies Merit Award; Meghan Greeley, The CBC Prize in Theatre; Sharon Warford, The Madeline Fowler Prize in English; Tess Espey and Adam F. Taylor, The Orvil Olsen Biology Prize; Katelyn Pike, Western Regional School of Nursing First Year Award; Christen Pafford, Western Regional School of Nursing Award - Fast-track Option; Jeffrey Hennebury and Jason Lanza, John A. Snow Prize in Mathematics; and Andrew Bowers, The Breakwater Books Folklore Prize.
Principal’s Student Governance Award
The Principal’s Student Governance Award, awarded by acting Principal Dr. Holly Pike in consultation with the Vice-Principal Dr. Bill Iams and Mr. Dennis Waterman, director of Administration and Finance, recognized GCSU President Terry Randell for his outstanding contribution to the governance of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College through his leadership and participation in affairs relating to the overall management of the institution.
GCSU Merit Awards
Ten GCSU Merit Awards were presented at the ceremony. These awards go to full-time students in first- or second-year studies, who, in the opinion of their peers, have contributed to the quality of life at Grenfell College through involvement in athletics, student council and/or clubs and societies on campus. This year’s winners are Kimberley Olson, Adam Elliott, Gabriella Hughes, Gina Billard, Charlotte Goodyear, Brad Evoy, Lisa Wakeham, Nyasha Musandu, Bruce Smith and Patricia Gill.
Grenfell sports
One of the goals of Student Affairs is to offer programs and services that promote or encourage physical activity and healthy living. As such, one of Student Affairs’ main focuses is competitive sports teams. This year students represented the college in women’s volleyball and men’s basketball.
The Women’s Volleyball Team under the guidance of coach Randy Rowsell had a very successful season, hosting the SWGC Volleyball League along with two tournaments – the tip-off tournament in October and the Winter Carnival tournament in February. The Grenfell team won both tournaments! And for the first time, the team travelled to Halifax to participate in the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association tip-off tournament, where they won the Tier 2 Division. In March the team travelled to Gander to compete in the Senior A provincials where they continued to play well. This year’s Volleyball MVP award went to Natalie Hillier.
The Men’s Basketball Team also had a successful year under the guidance of coach Bernie Buckle. The team played in the Corner Brook Men’s Basketball League and took top spot in the regular season. SWGC was and still is the team to beat! This year the team travelled to Grand Falls to compete in the Provincial Men’s Division 2 tournament and won the silver medal! There were two MVP awards this year – Steven Buckle and Michael Tavenor.
