About rapid prototyping and how it impacts your everyday life?
Catching up to Star Trek – freeform fabrication comes of age. Can you imagine a machine which can make any shape you ask for? Maybe it could even make all the parts necessary to make another machine like itself. Rapid prototyping technology is maturing and starting to make its way into everyday life as well as impacting the way engineers design products and communicate concepts. Memorial's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has been using this technology for over 10 years, both in its programs and in support of local industry.
Join Professor Andy Fisher as he demonstrates and explores this potentially transformative technology. Freeform fabrication or ”rapid prototyping” has been used locally to help in the development of products as diverse as guitars, satellite communications hardware, soap molds, winches and underground salt caverns. Will this technology make it into your home or garage soon? You can be sure that the future will see many, many more applications for these machines that appear to be right off the Enterprise.
This Speaking of Engineering lecture series, hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be held on Thursday, Feb.19, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., in the S. J. Carew Building’s Angus Bruneau Engineering Lecture Theatre, room EN-2006, on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. Admission is free. Parking is available in Lot 16. All are welcome. Reception will follow.
