SUBJECT: Lecture and information booth promote privacy awareness

Media agencies are invited to attend a pair of events on Memorial’s
St. John’s campus on Wednesday, Jan. 28, during Data Privacy Day.
The event, a joint initiative between Memorial’s Information Access and Privacy Protection Office, as well as the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for Newfoundland and Labrador, and Camouflage Software Inc., aims to boost the public’s awareness about data privacy issues.
An information booth will be set up on the third floor of the Smallwood Centre from 11:30 a.m., to 1:30 p.m., examining things such as phishing, identify theft and privacy in social networking.
Meanwhile, from 3-4 p.m., a free lecture will take place examining the variety of ways that data is lost online.
The talk – entitled I Know What You Did Last Summer: Stories of Personal Data Loss from 2008 – takes place in the Earth Sciences Building, room ER-3005B. All are welcome to attend.
The discussion will focus on the various ways data are lost by focusing on local and international stories of data loss and theft over the past year, including the recent Macdonald Drive Junior High hacking incident in St. John’s, and the LimeWire data loss at the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Health and Community Services. 
Speakers will include Rosemary Smith, co-ordinator of Memorial’s Information Access and Privacy Protection Office, as well as Dr. David Morgan, director of privacy research at Camouflage Software; and Lionel Clarke, an investigator from the OIPC.
