Two well-known Canadian artists will visit Sir Wilfred Grenfell College through the Visual Art Program Jan. 23 and 24.
Steve Higgins is a senior artist who is known for creating compelling and labour-intensive sculptures and installations. He also has an active drawing practice, "generating a whirling, apocalyptic and purely optical 'anarchitecture' in his large charcoal drawings.” Higgins has exhibited his work in many solo and group exhibitions across Canada and internationally. He has received many grants and his work is in prestigious public collections. With Rita McKeough, Higgins also curated the recent Floating Worlds exhibition at Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, featuring the art of Bernie Carpenter and Frank McKeough, two ex-fishermen who make intricate hanging sculptures fashioned from beer cans and hand-carved wooden mobiles. Higgins has taught art extensively at the University of Manitoba, and he currently teaches at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University.
Steve Higgins will give a public artist slide lecture on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts lecture theatre.
Jan Peacock is a video artist, writer and curator from Halifax who has exhibited widely throughout Canada, as well as in group shows and festivals in France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, and many galleries and museums in the U.S. Despite the voice of sensible reason suffusing Peacock's work, there is often an undercurrent of repressed unease or anxiety for an outside world over which she has little control, evoked by something from television or the news. Landscape and weather are continuing motifs: as context, as emotional and physical environment, and as framing device embodying a "desired place." The recipient of several Canada Council grants, she has won awards at the Atlantic Film & Video Festival (1990: Best Experimental), the Chicago International Film & Video Festival (1990: Silver Plaque), and the Atlanta Film & Video Festival (1992: Best Media Critique). She received the Bell Canada Award for Video in 1997.
Jan Peacock will give a public artist slide lecture on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts lecture theatre.
