Barb Hunt, Shawn O'Hagan and Robyn Love are asking interested craftspeople to break out their knitting needles.
Gestures of Resistance: The Knitted Mile is a project by local artist Robyn Love. Ms. Love will be installing a site-specific installation in Dallas, Texas, as part of the College Art Association's annual conference. Her piece is part of an exhibition titled "Gestures of Resistance: Craft, Performance and the Politics of Slow."
Fine arts faculty members Barb Hunt (visual arts) and Shawn O'Hagan (theatre) are encouraging local knitters to come on board and help Ms. Love create a mile of duplicate road stripe that will be placed over the actual road stripe in Dallas. Using yellow wool, Ms. Love will create the knit stripe in garter stitch, four inches wide.
"I also am using a crocheted chain stitch to create words that are sewn on top of the garter stitch stripe," she says. "The words are (or will be) quotations and/or other thoughts about how knitting is a gesture of resistance, particularly in the context of our culture of immediate gratification as embodied or evidenced by Dallas and its car culture."
Ms. Love says the gesture of placing a mile of knitting upon the roadways of Dallas "is intended to be an intervention, an interruption of the everyday environment created for cars and trucks (and all that they imply) with this lovingly made, handmade element. For me, it is as much a poetic gesture as a political one."
Yellow wool is available in a box in Grenfell's Fine Arts Building main office (fourth floor); anyone interested in helping to create a portion of the "mile" can drop by and pick up a ball of yarn. Ms. Love requests that knitted pieces are made using size 6.0 mm needles, in garter stitch (knit every row). Pieces should measure four inches or 10 cm. in width. She also requests that contributors take a photo of themselves knitting the stripe and e-mail to her. Completed strips can be returned to the same box in the Fine Arts office, and Ms. Hunt and Ms. O'Hagan will forward them to the artist. Please return contributions by Feb. 6.
