Sir Wilfred Grenfell College's Classics Program is pleased to present the Academy Award nominated film “Iphigenia” (pronounced if-i-jen-i'-a).
The film, which will be held Thursday, March 27, 7 p.m., in FC2014 of the Forest Centre, has a running time of 129 minutes; it's in Modern Greek with English subtitles. The film tells the story of Commander Agamemnon, who stands ready to launch his infamous thousand ships to retrieve the beautiful Helen of Troy. As the wind refuses to blow, a priest condemns him for sacrilege, and the powerful general is pressured to sacrifice his daughter to save the state. Threatened and tormented, Agamemnon is faced with sending his child like a lamb to the slaughter, betraying his regal wife (played by Irene Papas) with gut-wrenching, heart-breaking and shocking results.
An introduction to the film will be given by Dr. Carol J. King, Grenfell classics professor. Refreshments will be provided by Grenfell’s Classics Society. The event is free of charge.
