Note to editors:
More than 2,000 degrees will be awarded at Memorial University’s annual spring convocation at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre next week. There will be eight sessions of convocation from May 23-25, 2007.
Outstanding individuals from the worlds of business, public life, the arts and sports will be awarded honorary degrees during the convocation ceremonies.
The honorary graduands include: Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire, soldier and humanitarian; writer Wayne Johnston; Moyra Buchan, advocate for people with mental illnesses; Dr. Jack Clark, longtime director of C-CORE; Barbara Hopkins, founding president of the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador; Miller Ayre, businessman and publisher of The Telegram; Bruce Cockburn, singer, songwriter and humanitarian; and Hayley Wickenheiser, captain of the Canadian national women’s hockey team.
Honorary degree recipients are chosen by the Senate, the university’s academic governing body, after a very careful examination of the grounds for their nomination.
The honorary doctorate is designed to recognize extraordinary contribution to society or exceptional intellectual or artistic achievement. The awarding of honorary doctorates, an important feature of Memorial’s convocation, serves to celebrate both the individual and the university as well as to inspire graduates, their families and guests.
Chris Brookes, documentary radio broadcaster, was honoured during convocation at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College held on May 11 in Corner Brook.
Memorial’s president, Dr. Axel Meisen, will deliver his report to convocation during the 10 a.m. session of convocation on Friday, May 25.
