SUBJECT: Fall convocation to be held at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College

DATE: July 4, 2007

Due to an increasing number of students who meet graduation requirements during the spring and summer, a fall convocation will be introduced at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College this year. A number of new academic programs offered at Grenfell College will conclude at the end of the university’s third semester in August – including the fast-track bachelor of education and the bachelor of nursing programs.
Memorial University’s western Newfoundland campus will see about 60 students receive bachelor’s degrees in various disciplines including arts, science, nursing, education and fine arts at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre.
For her contribution to the development of traditional music in this province, singer/songwriter Pamela Morgan will be awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree.
“We felt it appropriate to allow those who’ve met the requirements to graduate to do so in a timely fashion,” said Dr. John Ashton, principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. “In particular, our students in the fast-track nursing and education programs, who finish their coursework in August, will benefit from this addition.”
University President Axel Meisen said that the additional fall convocation session is part of the university’s commitment to be responsive to students’ needs. “Since we have a significant number of students at the Grenfell campus who will be eligible to graduate by the fall, scheduling this convocation session is the right thing to do.” Memorial will also hold two sessions of fall convocation in St. John’s on Oct. 19.
