2004-2005

News Release

REF NO.: 51

SUBJECT:

DATE: October 15, 2004

Celebrate Memorial is here again and this year is expected to be bigger and better than ever before with exciting events planned for students, faculty, staff and the community. What began in 1999 with the Festival of Anniversaries, highlighting Memorial’s 50th anniversary as a degree-granting institution, has today become a celebration of Memorial’s connections to the community and the contributions that its students, faculty, staff and alumni make to Newfoundland and Labrador.

“What many people do not realize is that Memorial University has three parts to its mission statement – teaching, research and service to the community,” said Victoria Collins, director of University Relations. “Celebrate Memorial is an opportunity to celebrate the things we do that have a direct impact on the people of our province.”

Dr. Lilly Walker, dean of Student Affairs and Services and chair of the Celebrate Memorial committee, could not agree more. “Celebrate Memorial is a festival of activities, a time to come together and celebrate all the things about Memorial that make us proud to be a part of the community and the many contributions that we make to communities in Newfoundland and Labrador through teaching and research.”

This year’s festivities feature many flagship events at Memorial’s campuses in St. John’s and Corner Brook, including Memorial Writes . . . About Newfoundland and Labrador – a book fair featuring over 25 authors writing about Newfoundland and Labrador, a community service day of beautification and environmental clean-up in and around St. John’s, a community sports challenge featuring Memorial’s own Sea-Hawks against local politicians and media personalities, and a public lecture by international children’s rights advocate Craig Kielburger. In Corner Brook, flagship events include the Celebrate Memorial Campus Dash – an opportunity to lace up and get some exercise – and the Grenfell College Research Showcase, where participants will learn about the varied research activities going on at the west coast campus.

A huge amount of work has gone into making this an exciting program for all participants.

“In St. John’s, we are bringing in high-profile speakers like Craig Kielburger and alumnus and columnist Dr. Gwynne Dyer to help students get excited about how ideas can transform the world,” added Dr. Walker. “Students don’t often see the connection between what they are learning and its applicability to the larger picture. We also want to show students that there is much to be proud about attending Memorial. Our scholarship recognition events in St. John’sand Corner Brook are just one way for us to show students that we value them and are proud of their accomplishments.”

Celebrate Memorial will be launched in St. John’s, on Thursday, Oct. 21, in the University Centre at 10 a.m.and will conclude on Oct. 29 with the president’s awards ceremony. Memorial President Dr. Axel Meisen and Dean of Student Affairs and Services Lilly Walker will be on hand to officially announce the start of the celebrations. Representatives for each of the events will also be there to talk about what is happening during the week. Entertainment will be provided by the Scruncheons, and cake and refreshments will be served. In Corner Brook, the events begin with the Campus Dash on Oct. 20, at which Miss Newfoundland and Labrador will make an appearance. Participants in the dash will be treated to refreshments and cake, and will be eligible to win a number of prizes being awarded by local radio personality Steve Pollett of

K-ROCK.

“The wide diversity of activities planned for this year will ensure that there is something for everyone to get involved,” said Ms. Collins. “In St. John’s, we are also introducing participation cards this year to encourage folks to come out to as many events as possible and thereby increase their chances of winning one of several exciting prizes.”

Celebrate Memorial is a tradition that the university would like to see get bigger and better as each year goes by.

“Part of a university is to have traditions,” pointed out Ms. Collins. “Many universities have homecomings and reunions to get people together. This is our effort to bring people together to celebrate their university community, to draw attention to what Memorial has to offer and to highlight what it means to have a university in our community.”
