SUBJECT: Memorial University appoints executive director for Fisheries and Marine Institute

Dr. Axel Meisen, president of Memorial University is pleased to announce that Glenn Blackwood has been appointed executive director of the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI). The appointment was confirmed by the university’s Board of Regents at its July 21 meeting. Mr. Blackwood will take up his new position on Sept. 1, 2005.
“I am pleased that we have found an excellent person to lead the Fisheries and Marine Institute,” Dr. Meisen said of the appointment. “Mr. Blackwood knows the Marine Institute well and has distinguished himself here and abroad in the area of fisheries conservation. He understands the scientific, technological, economic, social and ecological pressures which are influencing the marine industry. The Marine Institute is an important aspect of Memorial’s presence in the marine sector and under his leadership it will grow and continue to serve the needs of our province.”
In this executive position, Mr. Blackwood will report directly to the vice-president (academic) and work collaboratively with other members of the senior administration of the university in promoting student services, fisheries and marine-related training, education, applied research and technology transfer. He will oversee all operations of the Marine Institute including strategic planning, student support, program development, industrial liaison, government relations, financial planning and human resource development. Mr. Blackwood will represent the Marine Institute on a variety on provincial, national and international organizations.
Most recently, Mr. Blackwood worked as director of the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources within the School of Fisheries at the Marine Institute where he was responsible for MI’s research and development activities related to harvesting technologies conservation and selectivity, gear technology and resource management.
Mr. Blackwood has an honours degree in marine biology and a master of arts degree in fisheries resource management both from Memorial University. He has been involved in the fishery and marine industry for the past 25 years and had considerable experience with both government and industry.
During the 1980s Mr. Blackwood worked as a marine biologist and later as a resource planning supervisor with the provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. In 1991 he became the director of resource analysis and in 1997 became the assistant deputy Minister of Fisheries. During the 1980s and 1990s he served as the provincial government’s representative on numerous national and international advisory committees including the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council of Canada (FRCC) and the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Council (NAFO). In 1997, Mr. Blackwood accepted the position of managing director with the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI), and in 2000 became the director of the newly created Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources at MI. During the past five years he has led a dramatic expansion of this Centre in terms of capacity and geographic range and positing it as the leader in sustainable fisheries and development with project work in Nunavut, Eastern US, Mexicoand throughout Newfoundlandand Labrador.
Glenn Blackwood lives in Portugal Cove-St. Phillips with his wife Christine and two sons.

Headquartered on Ridge Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the Marine Institute (MI) is Canada’s leading centre of fisheries and marine training.
