SUBJECT: Memorial engineering graduates get the latest designing tool

Students graduating from the offshore oil and gas engineering program at Memorial University now have a tool that lets them draw and design like never before. PROCAD Software Ltd. recently donated 20 Piping Suite licenses to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science valued at $85,000. The software includes a library and database for everything from valves to fittings to pipes used when designing an oil and gas operation. Previously, students, using AutoCAD, would have to physically draw in all of these elements. Now, this software will do that for them as well as tell them if their design is going to work in the real world.
Dr. Vlastimil Masek, an assistant professor in electrical engineering at Memorial University, was instrumental in obtaining the software. “The software will help students produce their assignments, lab reports and project documentation more efficiently and in line with the current standards,” he said. Until now, students used a plain CAD program to make the drawings but this is very tedious and time consuming. Students in the offshore oil and gas engineering (OOGE) program will benefit the most from the donation as piping and instrumentation systems represent a pivotal part in any oil and gas operation including production platforms, transportation and refineries.”
The PROCAD Piping Suite includes software for both the schematic/logic design including process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams, and for the physical/layout design which involves the arrangement of the specified pipes, vessels, valves, pipe supports and instruments. Isometric drawings and bills of materials can be also extracted from the CAD drawings.
“This software gives our graduates a much greater advantage in a highly competitive job market,” says Dr. Masek. Lisa Knapman agrees. She is a Term 8 electrical engineering student in the OOGE option. “Having experience with the type of software, I believe, will give me a slight advantage when I head out into the work force, as many students today do not have access to it or experience using it. It will also save us some time as we, hopefully, won't have to test three or four different valves (for example) before coming up with the right one.”
