SUBJECT: Memorial chemistry professor wins prestigious award

A professor in the Department of Chemistry at Memorial has been recognized for his outstanding research in the field of organic chemistry. Dr. Graham Bodwell has been awarded the Merck-Frosst Centre for Therapeutic Research Award for 2005.

Dr. Bodwell was born in Epsom, Great Britain, but moved to British Columbiain 1971. He studied chemistry at the University of Victoria, obtaining his B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in 1984. His honours and subsequent M.Sc. research spawned a lifelong interest in cyclophane chemistry, a study of novel and interesting organic molecules. Following completion of his M.Sc. in 1986, he moved to Braunschweig, West Germany, to pursue doctoral studies, again working on cyclophanes. After receiving his doctorate in 1989, he crossed the Channel to join the group of Dr. Steve Davies at Oxford, where he worked in the area of asymmetric synthesis.

In 1992 he accepted an assistant professorship at Memorial University. He was later tenured and promoted to associate professor in 1997 and full professor in 2001. Dr. Bodwell's current research interests are in the areas of cyclophanes, non-planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, inverse electron demand Diels-Alder chemistry, synthetic methodology and the total synthesis of natural products and their analogues. His research is focused on trying to make molecules within this class that are very unusual in their structures and, consequently, their chemical and physical properties. Dr. Bodwell is the recipient of the 1998 President's Award for Outstanding Research and the 1999 Petro Canada Young Innovator Award.

The Merck-Frosst Centre for Therapeutic Research Award is presented by the Canadian Society for Chemistry to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution in the fields of organic chemistry or biochemistry while working in Canada.
