Special Event: Indigenous History in Sweden

 

On Friday, 1 March 2019 from 12:00-13:00 in the Nexus Centre, Dr. Per Axelsson will present a talk entitled “Indigenous Health and History in Sweden.” Immediately after that talk he will discuss the creation of the CESAM (Centre for Sami Studies) at Umeå University before leading a round-table discussion “Two Decades of Indigenous Research: A Non-Indigenous Perspective.” This will address topics such as strategies for education and research, collaboration with local indigenous communities, international research collaborations, research ethics, and more.

Dr. Axelsson is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden and affiliated to the Vaartoe - Centre for Sami Research since 2004. He is currently the Vice Dean of Research at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Umeå University.

Per Axelsson has written extensively about matters of health and living conditions, identity, and colonization among the Indigenous Sami population. Among other significant publications, he has co-edited the volume Indigenous Peoples and Demography: The Complex Relation between Identity and Statistics. As a Wallenberg Academy Fellow, he is engaged in a multi-year research project entitled “Indigenous Health in Transition - a Longitudinal Study of Colonization, State and the Health of Indigenous Peoples in Sweden, Australia and New Zealand, 1850-2000.”
