The Department of History and the Maritime Studies Research Unit at Memorial University are well respected for their expertise in the history of sea borne commerce, shipping and international fisheries.

The Maritime History Archive comprises one of the finest repositories of information on maritime history anywhere, and members of the Department of History act in an advisory and consultative capacity for students and scholars all over the world.

Since 1989, the International Journal of Maritime History has been published at Memorial University.

Maritime history is one of the fields in which the department offers a Ph.D degree.

While faculty have considerable experience in the application of statistical analysis to massive datasets from materials created in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we also welcome students interested in new historical approaches to men, women and the sea in the modern and early modern periods.
