Synergy Session: Sci-Fact: How Robots and Computers are improving service delivery

With Andrew Treusch, Dr. Michael Jong, and Donna Kelland

Tuesday, April 29, 2014, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm

The Landing, UC-3018, University Centre, Memorial University, St. John's

Session Description

No longer do you have to wait in line for hours to renew your driver’s license, now you can do it in a few moments with a few clicks. Filing your taxes? Click-click-done. And what about visiting a doctor in a remote community? No more lengthy trips and days off work; just drop by and visit the doctor in the community clinic who is there remotely—in the form of a five-foot tall robot named Rosie. This is a trend rampant in all sectors, public and private, where service providers are turning to high-tech to improve client convenience and cut costs.

Join the Commissioner of the Canada Revenue Agency Mr. Andrew Treusch, robotic medicine pioneer Dr. Michael Jong (live from Happy Valley-Goose Bay), and Donna Kelland (Government of Newfoundland and Labrador) for a discussion of how this increasing shift towards E-Services is making service provision more efficient and service users’ lives better.

Andrew Treusch is the Commissioner of the Canada Review Agency, the Federal Deputy Minister Champion for Memorial University, and the President of the Institute for Public Administration of Canada.

Dr. Michael Jong is rural physician in Labrador. He is the Vice President of Medical Services for Labrador Grenfell Regional Health Authority and Professor of Family Medicine at Memorial University. Dr. Jong’s passion is in rural and remote medical practice. He served as the president of the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada from 2006-8. He is currently the Vice President of the Canadian Society of Circumpolar Health. Dr. Jong’s research is on circumpolar health and on Rural and Remote Medicine.

Donna Kelland Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
