Choosing Wisely NL: The safe and appropropriate use of health care resources in NL

A primary focus of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians is their well-being, which is influenced by health care resources in a multi-faceted way: (1) health care providers, hospitals and testing facilities, of medicines and related services and the provision of education and preventive programs affect our health status and well-being; (2) health care expenditures, with their associated employment and the purchase of goods and services are important local economic development drivers, and (3) the funding of heath care resources have significant fiscal implications. Health care is important to every dimension of the economy.

An understanding of whether these resources are being used wisely and are sustainable, will have a direct bearing on the discussion pertaining to the current fiscal crisis being faced by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and will have broader implications for the overall economy.

Dr. Parfrey will discuss the results of the research that Choosing Wisely NL has been undertaken with respect to the safe and appropriate use of health care resources within Newfoundland and Labrador.
