Calendar Changes to Existing Biochemistry Programs and Course Offerings 2019-2020

There are some changes to existing Biochemistry programs and course offerings in the upcoming academic year that you will need to take into consideration when choosing your courses for both the Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 semesters.

Program Changes:

1. Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 we will be introducing two new dedicated laboratory courses: Biochemistry 3906 (Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism Laboratory) and Biochemistry 3907 (Molecular Biology Laboratory). Biochemistry 3907 will be offered in Fall and Biochemistry 3906 will be offered in Winter.
   
   
2. We will be removing the laboratory portion which currently exists in Biochemistry 3107 (Nucleic Acid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). This will then become a lecture only course and will be renumbered as Biochemistry 3207 (Nucleic Acid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). (Fall offering only)
   
   
3. We will be removing the laboratory portion which currently exists in Biochemistry 3106 (Metabolism). This will then become a lecture only course and will be renumbered as Biochemistry 3206 (Metabolism). (Fall and Winter offerings)

Further Course Changes:

1. Biochemistry 2600 (Introduction to Human Nutrition) will be offered Fall (slot 16) and will no longer be offered in Winter, beginning Fall 2019.
   
   
2. Biochemistry 2005 (Food, Food Safety, and Health) will be offered Winter and will no longer be offered in Fall, beginning Fall 2019.
   
   
3. Biochemistry 4002 (Biochemical Regulation) will not be offered in the 2019-2020 academic year
   
   
4. Biochemistry 4103 (Prokaryotic Gene Regulation) will not be offered in the 2019-2020 academic year
   
   
5. Biochemistry 4230 (Lipid & Lipoprotein Metabolism) will not be offered in the 2019-2020 academic year
   
   
6. Biochemistry 4240 (Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics) will not be offered in the 2019-2020 academic year
   
   
7. Biochemistry 4231 (Molecular Biology of the Bacterial-Human Interface) is a special topics course that will be offered Winter 2020.
   
   
8. Biochemistry 4502 will be offered Fall 2019 and not in Winter 2020
   
   
9. Biochemistry 3052 (Food Microbiology) will be offered Winter 2020 and not in Fall.

For 2^nd year Biochemistry and Biochemistry(Nutrition) students

How will moving Biochemistry 2600 into Fall semester affect me?

Biochemistry (Nutrition) Major and Honours students: Biochemistry 2600 is a required course in your program and you should register for it in Fall.

Biochemistry Major and Honours students: Biochemistry 2600 is an optional course in your program. If you wish to complete it you can take it in any Fall semester that it can be scheduled.

How will moving Biochemistry 2005 into Winter semester affect me?

Biochemistry (Nutrition) Major and Honours students: Biochemistry 2005 is a required course in your program and you should register for it in Winter 2020.

For 3^rd year Biochemistry and Biochemistry(Nutrition) students

How will the renumbering of Biochemistry 3106 and 3107 affect me?

If you have completed Biochemistry 2201 (or 2101) you should register for Biochemistry 3206 and, if required or desired, Biochemistry 3207 for Fall 2019.

How will the introduction of the new Biochemistry laboratory courses Biochemistry 3906 & 3907 affect me?

Biochemistry Majors : One of Biochemistry 3906 or 3907 is required in your program. If not completed in third year, you should be able complete this requirement in fourth year, assuming you have required prerequisites and room in your schedule. (The other could serve as a specified elective in your program.)

Biochemistry Honours: Both Biochemistry 3906 and 3907 are required in your program. While you can do one or both of these in fourth year, you will need to choose your courses carefully so that you can complete your required courses on time.

Biochemistry (Nutrition) Major and Honours students: Biochemistry 3906 is required in your program. If not completed in third year, you should be able complete this requirement in fourth year, assuming you have required prerequisites and room in your schedule. (Bioc 3907 could serve as a specified elective in your program.)

How will moving Biochemistry 2600 into Fall semester affect me?

Biochemistry (Nutrition) Major and Honours students: Biochemistry 2600 is a required course in your program and if you have not already completed it, you should register for it in Fall. It is a prerequisite for Biochemistry 3203 Fundamentals Human Nutrition.

Biochemistry Major and Honours students: Biochemistry 2600 is an optional course in your program. If you wish to complete it you can take it in any Fall semester that it can be scheduled.

How will the winter offering of Biochemistry 3052 affect me?
If you are a Biochemistry (Nutrition) Major or a Biochemistry (Nutrition) Honours student, Biochemistry 3052 is an optional course in your program. If you wish to complete it in the coming academic year and you meet prerequisites, you should take it in the Winter semester.

For 4^th year Biochemistry and Biochemistry (Nutrition) students

How will the introduction of the new laboratory courses, Biochemistry 3906 and 3907 and the renumbering of Biochemistry 3106 and 3107 affect my program?

If you have successfully completed Biochemistry 3106 and 3107(if required), these changes will not impact you and you can continue to follow the university calendar regulations that you have been following all along. If you have not completed either of these courses (Biochemistry 3106 or 3107) but need to do them before graduation in Spring 2020, please contact bcadvice@mun.ca.

How will moving Biochemistry 2600 into Fall semester affect me?

For students pursuing a Major or an Honours program in Biochemistry, Biochemistry 2600 is an optional course in your program. If you wish to complete it you must take it in the Fall semester.

How will the offering of Biochemistry 4502 this coming Fall instead of Winter affect me?

For students pursuing an Honours Degree in Biochemistry (Nutrition) or Joint Honours in Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience):
Biochemistry 4502 is a required course in your program and for this academic year you must complete it in the Fall semester.

How will the absence of Biochemistry 4002 this coming academic year affect me?

For students pursuing an Honours Degree in Biochemistry (Nutrition) or Joint Honours in Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience):
Biochemistry 4002 is a required course in your program but for this academic year you can replace it with any 3 credit hour course (not necessarily a Biochemistry course).
Please note, to graduate with an Honours in Biochemistry(Nutrition) you must have a grade "B" or an average of 75% or higher in 60 credit hours (20 courses) chosen from Biochemistry courses and Biology 3050. Removing Biochemistry 4002 from the list of required courses for this program means you have 20 required courses in your program not 21. You would need to meet this academic requirement for ALL your required Biochemistry courses (including Medicine 310A/B, Biol 3050).

For students who are completing a Major in Biochemistry, Honours in Biochemistry, Joint programs with Biochemistry or Major in Biochemistry (Nutrition):

Biochemistry 4002 is an optional course in these programs. You will need to select your Biochemistry electives carefully, to make sure that you complete the full number of courses that are required so that you can graduate in Spring as planned.

How will the absence of Biochemistry 4103, 4230 and 4240 this coming academic year affect me?

These are optional course in many of our programs. You will need to select your Biochemistry electives carefully to make sure that you complete the full number of courses that are required so that you can graduate in Spring as planned.

How will the offering of Biochemistry 3052 this coming Winter instead of Fall affect me?
Biochemistry 3052 is an optional course in our Major, Honours and Joint Honours in Nutrition programs. If you wish to complete it, you must take it in the Winter semester.

Students pursuing Joint Honours Degrees in Biochemistry and Biochemistry(Nutrition)

I am doing the Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) Joint Honours. How will Biochemistry 2600 moving to the Fall semester affect me?

Biochemistry 2600 is a required course in your program if you are planning to complete Biochemistry 2600 in the coming year, you should register for it in Fall.

I am in my final year of the Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) Joint Honours. How will I be affected by Biochemistry 4002 not being offered this coming academic year?

Biochemistry 4002 is a required course in your program but for this academic year you can replace it with any 3 credit hour course (not necessarily a Biochemistry course).

I am in my final year of the Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) Joint Honours. How will I be affected by Biochemistry 4502 being offered in Fall 2019?

Biochemistry 4502 is a required course in your program and for this academic year you must complete it in the Fall semester.

For Chemistry Students

I am doing a Degree in Chemistry (Biological). How will the renumbering of Biochemistry 3106 and 3107 affect me?

For the General or Honours Degree in Chemistry (Biological), both Biochemistry 3106 (or 3206) and 3107 (or 3207) are specified electives, consequently the renumbering will not affect you.

How will the renumbering of Biochemistry 3106 (to Biochemistry 3206) and the introduction of a new Biochemistry laboratory course (Biochemistry 3906) affect me?

If Biochemistry 3106 is a required course in your program you can now replace it with Biochemistry 3206. Biochemistry 3906 would NOT be required in your program.

For Ocean Sciences students

I am completing a Marine Biology Joint Major and have already completed Biochemistry 3106. How will the introduction of a new Biochemistry laboratory course (Biochemistry 3906) and the renumbering of Biochemistry 3106 (to Biochemistry 3206) affect me?

If you have successfully completed Biochemistry 3106, there will be no change to your program.

I am completing a Marine Biology Joint Major and have not completed Biochemistry 3106. What do I do now?

If you have not completed Biochemistry 3106 you will now need to complete Biochemistry 3206. Biochemistry 3906 will NOT be required in your program.

I am doing a Minor in Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Ecology and Biochemistry 3107 is a specified elective in my program. I wish to take this course. What do I do now?

If you wish to you can take Biochemistry 3207 in place of Biochemistry 3107.
