Congratulations and Thank you

We’d like to send a huge thank you to our graduate students who took the time to cook a delicious holiday brunch earlier this month! The variety and amount of food was fantastic and your event is going to be a hard act to follow.

Congratulations to Mahesha Asiriwardhana, a MSc. student in Brunton/Bertolo lab, on the birth of her baby boy born on October 20th, 2018.

The following people received various awards, congratulations to you all:

  • Alexandria Tobin received Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Training Program– Traineeship Award for a 16 month period from September 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019. Alexandria is a Masters student in Dr. Brown’s lab.
  • Julia White- the School of Graduate Studies F.A. Aldrich Fellowship. Julia is a Masters student in Dr. Brunton's lab.
  • Modeline Longjohn (Dr. Christian) won second place at the cross-campus 3-minute thesis competition.
  • Anthony Akerele (Dr. Cheema) and Yanitza Arroyo (co-supervised by Dr. Booth) won first and second place awards at the Faculty of Science 3-minute thesis competition.
  • Rasanjali Egodage (Dr. Banoub/Dr. Shahidi) and Han Peng (Dr. Shahidi) received the CIFST Travel Award. 
  • Rasanjali Egodage (Dr. Banoub/Dr. Shahidi) attended the 11th ISNFF conference in Vancouver, BC and received 3rd place for her poster.
  • Han Peng (Dr. Shahidi) received the Fereidoon Shahidi Fellowship Award in recognition of outstanding performance in graduate studies and nutraceuticals and functional foods research.

Congratulations to Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi who was elected the Fellow of ISNFF in recognition of his scientific contributions and services to the nutraceuticals and functional foods.

Congratulations to Abrehem Abad on completing his MSc. (Food Science) (Dr. Shahidi)

Congratulations to the following students on successfully defending their PhD thesis:

  • O. Chandani Dinesh (Dr. Brunton)

Dr. Won Young Oh started as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Shahidi’s lab in October just after successfully completing her PhD in Food Science. Congratulations Won Young.

Congratulations to Dr. John (Sean) Brosnan who will be retiring on December 31, 2018. A celebration to honour Dr. Brosnan’s long career will be held at Bitters pub on Friday, January 11, 2019.
Dr. Brosnan has generously donated funds to kick start a new endowment fund the Brosnan Lecture in Biochemistry Endowment Fund. This fund will allow the department to invite an eminent biochemist to deliver one or more lectures on Biochemical Research and/or on the History of Biochemistry on an annual basis
