Parking and traffic considerations during the Canada Games

Drivers can anticipate heavy traffic around the Avalon region during the 2025 Canada Games Aug. 8-25 and in particular around Memorial’s St. John’s campus. Please plan your routes accordingly, drive with caution and allow extra time for your daily commute. 

Lot reassignment for some parking areas

Licensed Parking Lot Map

Lots highlighted in yellow on the map linked above are licensed to the Canada Games Host Society from August 8-25, 2025.

These lots include: Lot 3, Lot 5, Lot 6, Lot 11, Lot 14, Lot 15, Lot 16A, Lot 18, Lot 36 and the motorcycle lot on Livyer's Loop.

Roads around residence areas will also be closed to thru traffic.

Those normally assigned to a licensed lot will be reassigned to an alternate lot. See chart below for more information. Annual and summer permit holders on St. John’s Campus will receive permit discounts for the Games period.

The overflow lot will be Lot 19 near Queen's College.

If you require Blue Zone parking, please contact the Parking Office directly at parking@mun.ca  to coordinate your parking during this time.

Permit holders are encouraged to consider other modes of transport including, carpooling, public transport, biking and walking. A limited number of complimentary Metrobus passes are available. Email parking@mun.ca if interested.

Permit holders who are on leave but volunteering on St. John's Campus are encouraged to park in the assigned 'Volunteer Parking', to be communicated by the Host Society.


Road closures during the games

During the Games, Memorial’s St. John’s campus roads around residences will be closed to through traffic, which will impact Livyers Loop, Phelan Road and Russel Road as indicated on Licensed Parking Lot Map. Only Canada Games buses for athletes and Memorial service vehicles will be allowed in this area. Permit holders for 15B will be provided with access from Elizabeth Ave.


Canada Games Set up - Impacts to parking lots 6 and 11

To support equipment setup for the Canada Games, parking lots 6 and 11 are now closed to vehicle traffic. 

Permit holders for Lot 6 are asked to use their temporary reassigned parking area, lot 15B. Permit holders for Lot 11 are asked to use their temporary reassigned parking area, lot 22. Please ensure your parking  permit is clearly displayed while parked in your reassigned lot. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact parking@mun.ca.
