Community Service-Learning Day
As a key event for I Love MUNdays, this annual event encourages students, faculty and staff to serve their community through various projects. This event is an excellent way to interact with students outside the classroom and serve the community.
Community Service-Learning Day
Saturday, October 20, 2012
What a Great Day!! The weather was just perfect and the volunteers were ready, willing and able to give back -armed with shovels, personal care items and cowbells! CSL Day 2012 saw over 100 students, faculty and staff giving back to their community through outreach, community meal sharing, environmental work, animal care and many other projects needed by our organizational partners. A HUGE THANK YOU to all the volunteers and participants in this wonderful community building event.
We are putting on a spread - for some people who really appreciate a helping hand. During our 2nd Street Reach Community Lunch, students, faculty and staff at Memorial will prepare and serve a nutritious and welcoming meal for over 100 people who are experiencing poverty. The Street Reach event offers a great opportunity to get involved in the community, while also learning about some tough issues affecting our most marginalized members of society. The event is also a celebration of the resiliency and the unique talents our community members possess and helping build community spirit through gathering together with music and performance. I know you will be inspired and uplifted by the difference you will make in people's lives.
Let's all head to the beach!! It's not too late. Come out for a great day of team-building and discover what lies outside St. John's in the heart and soul of Newfoundland - the ocean front! We'll be working together to clean-up Topsail Beach in beautiful Conception Bay. Guiding us on our journey is MI Ocean Net Educational Coordinator, Justin Dearing, who will offer a variety of activities for volunteers to reflect on and projects that engage and motivate us to see our challenges as opportunities! His passion and dedication to preserving the marine environment is both infectious and inspiring. You won't want to miss the bus for this inspiring day of beach frolicking, fun, and giving back to the community by removing what's been left behind!
Are you an animal person who melts at the sight of puppy-dog eyes? Or, how about the aloof 'tude of the kitty! We need your kind! The SPCA are a long-standing volunteer organization who are exceptionally dedicated to animal welfare in this province. You will learn about the amazing work they're doing to support animals, interact with our beautiful furry friends, and help out around the shelter with small maintenance work. In the afternoon, we'll head over to the launch of the brand new SPCA Thrift store - setting up merchandise displays and perhaps getting your sales skills going by interacting with customers. Animal lovers unite! Get your paws (I mean hands) working and make a big difference in the lives of animals in need of a home and some loving kindness. What could be more puur-fect than that?
