Support for Public Engagement

While most of Memorial’s departments, centres and units are involved in public engagement activities, including specific projects and initiatives, there are also many that are specifically mandated to help support Memorial’s public engagement activities overall. From programs that connect Memorial with the public and funding for public engagement, to knowledge mobilization and student opportunities, the groups listed below have plenty to offer those interested in public engagement at Memorial.

 

The Labrador Institute

The Labrador Institute is Memorial’s presence in Labrador and a link to the local community. LI’s mandate is to support the local community’s engagement in research and to make regional research needs known to the university. The Institute works to identify research opportunities in collaboration with its board of local representatives, facilitates communication between researchers and the local community and carries out research projects in accordance with staff expertise. 

LI’s current engagement includes partnerships with the College of the North Atlantic and the Nunatsiavut Government, amongst others, working in the areas of natural resources, creative arts, and heritage. Ongoing projects include the Labrador Institute film collection which is widely used by community groups, the Sivunivut research project on traditional land and water use, and a series of books for children designed to promote the knowledge of traditional and Western science as well as Aboriginal languages.

The Leslie Harris Centre

The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development links research groups with stakeholders and local communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador on issues of regional policy and development. The Centre encourages informed debate and collaborations at the provincial level through workshops, public forums and applied research funding. 

The Harris Centre is engaged in promoting a vibrant democracy, informed citizen participation and the promotion of values true to Newfoundland and Labrador’s unique culture and identity. The Harris Centre also plays an advisory role in directing Memorial’s research priorities and is home to Yaffle, the online search engine that offers public access to information on the university’s research, teaching and outreach activities.

Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research

The Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research contributes to the effectiveness of health and community services in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the physical, social and psychological health of its population by supporting the development and use of applied health research. Through its programs, the Centre engages Memorial University faculty and researchers directly with knowledge users in the provincial healthcare system. The Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program supports evidence-based decision making by engaging provincial decision-makers in its research projects from the selection of the topics to the dissemination and uptake of the synthesis results. 

The Research Exchange Groups encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange between Memorial’s research community and a broad spectrum of community stakeholders. The Centre aims to improve the health of populations and communities, support decisions about government health policy, and address health system research needs through its grants and awards program, knowledge transfer and capacity building activities.

Genesis Group Inc.

The GENESIS Group Inc. is Memorial University’s link to the business community. The Genesis Research division works with faculty and students to identify areas of research need, research and development collaboration opportunities and vehicles for commercializing innovations developed at Memorial University. The Genesis Centre is an on-campus facility that assists local technology companies in the early stages of development and growth, providing offices and administrative resources, assistance with planning and marketing, and access to a network of technical, managerial and financial advisors and mentors. Areas of expertise include Biotechnology, Medicine, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Information Technology and Communications.

Bonne Bay Marine Station

The Bonne Bay Marine Station is operated by Memorial University and the Gros Morne Co-operating Association to provide a research and teaching facility for students, researchers and the general public. The station is dedicated to expanding knowledge of marine ecology, offering research and teaching facilities, and providing access to a uniquely diverse marine habitat in North-Eastern North America.

Environmental Policy Institute

The Environmental Policy Institute, located at Grenfell Campus, is dedicated to researching and facilitating debate on critical environmental policy issues within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The EPI coordinates and disseminates research on climate change and energy related issues to both the academic and the general public. The Institute’s public initiatives include organizing the Reel Green Film Series, helping deliver the Newfoundland and Labrador Nature Atlas through a partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and various ongoing public engagement activities with our community partners and collaborators.

The Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning

The Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) is an academic support unit that connects Memorial’s faculties and departments, campuses and communities through its online courses and programs, its support for educator development, and its responsibility to advance and support the effective use of technologies for teaching and learning. CITL also employs its expertise and capabilities in video production and multimedia development, educational technology application, instructional design, educator development, learning space design, and delivery and service processes to carry out innovative outreach projects with partners both locally and around the world. Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation

CCFI assists the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery and aquaculture industry to enhance its productivity, profitability and sustainability by providing access for industry to the scientific research and technology services of Memorial University and the Marine Institute. CCFI works directly with industry clients to identify research and development needs and with scientific and technological staff to devise solutions that meet those needs. Industry clients can receive assistance in Oceans Conservation (improved fishing gear selectivity and other methods of by-catch avoidance, sea-bottom friendly fishing technologies, and stock assessments and surveys), Vessel Safety and Operational Productivity (safety technologies; vessel design; and energy efficiencies through improved gears and designs), Processing (product quality enhancements; processing automation; value-added production; waste management; biotechnology) and Aquaculture (productivity enhancements for established commercial species; and various initiatives for developing species). The Centre also assists clients to find funding to carry out projects and will provide its own funding when required.

Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS)

Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) is an academic support unit that connects Memorial’s faculties and departments, campuses and communities through its distance education offers, its support for instructional development, and its responsibility to advance and support the effective use of technologies for teaching and learning. DELTS also employs its expertise and capabilities in video production, multimedia and educational technology application, instructional design, teaching development, learning space design, and delivery and service processes to carry out innovative outreach projects with external partners both locally and around the world. The International Centre

The International Centre leads, supports and partners with other units to deliver international education programs and on-campus services and resources. The IC is committed to internationalizing the learning process and is host to key-speakers, workshops and initiatives that link Memorial students, staff and faculty to opportunities to engage with diverse communities locally, provincially, nationally and worldwide.

The Fisheries and Marine Institute

The Marine Institute (MI) is Canada’s most comprehensive centre for education, training, applied research and industrial support for the ocean industries. Through its wide range of technical education and training courses, including short industrial response courses, diploma of technology programs, and bachelor and master’s degree programs as well as its participation in applied research and development, technology transfer, and public policy advocacy initiatives, the Marine Institute is actively involved in contributing to the economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Department of Ocean Sciences

The Department of Ocean Sciences is located in the Ocean Sciences Centre (OSC) in Logy Bay, NL. The OSC is a major facility for marine research on the Atlantic coast, and is one of Canada’s largest marine laboratories, providing Canadian and international scientists and students access to the flora and fauna of the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The Centre plays a continuous role in public awareness in marine sciences through public and marine science programs

In addition to the summer education program, there have been a number of on-going projects and collaborations in outreach initiatives, including working with several private organizations and companies looking into developing marine educational programs in the school curriculum and creating eco-tourism for rural communities across the Province. Other outreach activities have included attending several workshops and events to promote ocean awareness and education.

The Office of Public Engagement

The Office of Public Engagement provides support to Memorial's publically engaged students, faculty, staff and units. The Office will also work with Memorial's external partners and collaborators to help make public engagement possible. The Office coordinated the development of the Public Engagement Framework, and is currently working with internal and external groups to design programs and initiatives to advance the objectives of the Framework.

The Division of Co-op Education

The Division of Co-op Education’s mandate is to provide services to students, employers and faculty that result in the best co-operative education experience possible. For students, the Division offers a range of co-operative education programs with job placements in national and international settings and a Director’s award, for an outstanding senior co-op student. For employers, the Division offers information on funding opportunities for hiring co-op students.

The Atlantic Computational Excellence Network

The Atlantic Computational Excellence Network (ACEnet) is a consortium of Atlantic Canadian Universities that provide researchers with high performance computing (HPC), collaboration and visualization tools, software, training, and support with the purpose of accelerating discovery and innovation. ACEnet is a partner of Compute Canada, the organization responsible for research High Performance Computing in Canada. It is supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council, and the Provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland Labrador, and New Brunswick. ACEnet resources are freely available to any university researcher in Canada.

C-Core

C-CORE is a separately incorporated not-for-profit R & D with world-leading capabilities in Remote Sensing, Ice Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. C-CORE provides research-based advisory services and technology solutions for ice-prone regions to national and international industry and government clients in the natural resource, energy, security and transportation sectors. Throughout the past generation, C-CORE has supported some 1100 undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students on their path to become the highly qualified personnel needed to drive global innovation, and has served as an incubator for 18 new technology companies. C-CORE is home to LOOKNorth, a Canadian Centre of Excellence for remote sensing innovation to support northern resource development, and CARD, the Centre for Arctic Resource Development. C-CORE participates in conferences and information sessions such as NOIA and Oceans Advance for the purpose of sharing information with the broader community, answers to media requests on topics of substantial expertise, such as ice islands and arctic technology, and provides tours and demonstrations to interested groups at their request.

The Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place

MMaP’s mandate is to initiate and enable music research within the academic and general community, with a focus on Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich traditional music. The centre promotes national and international exchanges by sponsoring visiting lecturers and organizing a lecture series, as well as annual symposia or conferences. The MMaP works with educators, community organizations and similarly mandated institutions and groups to facilitate the dissemination of cultural resources and the oral cultures of Newfoundland and Labrador, to exchange information and ideas, and to promote international dialogue. MMaP is a promoter of traditional Newfoundland and Labrador music both through physical media and online.

SafetyNet Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Research

The SafetyNet Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Research is a community alliance for multidisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and education in occupational health and safety (OHS). SafetyNet is dedicated to improving the safety of workplaces and the health of workers in Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada through broadly-based partnerships between academic researchers and stakeholders in communities, government, industry, and labour.

The Atlantic Canada Venture Gateway

The Atlantic Canada Venture Gateway (ACVG) is an outreach initiative of Memorial University’s Faculty of Business Administration. ACVG prepares Atlantic Canadian technology firms to attract venture capital and private equity and assists companies in securing the investment they need to realize their growth potential. Clients of ACVG are exceptional entrepreneurs committed to developing or expanding industry-leading companies in the Atlantic region. The Memorial University Botanical Garden
  • Memorial University of Newfoundland's Botanical Garden (MUNBG) is a not-for-profit resource centre for basic and applied botanical, horticultural and environmental research and education with a vision to advance and enrich sustainable relationships among people, plants and the environment. Since 1971, MUNBG has promoted environmental monitoring, native plant conservation, and biodiversity in native habitats such as our province's wetlands, and boreal forest ecosystems.
  • Winner of the 2011 Sustainable Tourism Award, MUNBG is a mecca for new and seasoned gardeners alike, families, community organizations, schools and tourists, offering gardening and nature workshops, curriculum-based educator resource guides such as From Garden to Classroom and Breaking Ground, as well as fun family programs and summer camps.
  • For local residents and visitors, the Botanical Garden is perhaps best known as a popular destination of themed gardens and peaceful nature trails, and for its community outreach including the popular Garden Time radio show aired twice weekly on VOWR, and as regular contributor's of CBC's radio's Gardening Crosstalk. New for 2013, About the Garden television series will air on local cable stations starting February 14, bringing local gardening topics and tips to the community.

The Newfoundland Quarterly

The Newfoundland Quarterly is a journal published four times a year by the Newfoundland Quarterly Foundation Board, a not-for-profit charitable foundation at Memorial University. Featuring columns, interviews, reviews and visual art, the Newfoundland Quarterly is engaged in the lively and ongoing discussion of the culture and history of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Ocean Engineering Research Centre

The OERC is a part of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, at Memorial University. Its mandate is to advance ocean engineering research technology in Canada by fostering an innovative research milieu and promoting broader cooperation among researchers and industry stakeholders. The OERC focuses on applied research, consultancy work and involvement with shaping policies in ocean technologies. Projects cover a range of topics related to the offshore, marine transportation and fishing industries.

The Centre for Earth Resources Research Centre (CERR)

CERR is a part of the Earth Sciences Department at Memorial University and is the geoscience component in the university’s Oil and Gas Development Partnership. Drawing on the research expertise of faculty, research staff and their industry and government partners, the centre is involved in research in the fields of petroleum and mineral resources, exploration technology and environmental geoscience. CERR makes its facilities available to the private sector and is engaged in technical knowledge transfer through professional development and training courses.

 

The Maritime Studies Research Unit

MSRU is a research unit of the Faculty of Arts at Memorial University. It fosters research on maritime topics across the University and provides opportunities for Memorial faculty, students and visiting scholars to present their research in workshops, colloquia and as individual paper presentations. The Unit promotes interdisciplinarity and cooperation with schools, families, history societies and environmental organizations.
