Message from the Chair

The Discipline of Pediatrics is an active and vibrant community of dedicated clinicians, researchers, educators, and learners. We are committed to providing exceptional clinical care to children in Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout the Maritimes while upholding the values and mission outlined in the Faculty of Medicine’s strategic plan, Grounded in Excellence.

Our faculty members are leaders in their fields, contributing meaningfully to research, medical education, quality improvement, and health-care leadership at local, national, and international levels. They provide care at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s, as well as in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and across Atlantic Canada. Collectively, we are driven to deliver high-quality care and to train the next generation of pediatricians who will continue to advance child health.

We are actively engaged in leadership roles within the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Canadian Pediatric Society, and numerous other national organizations dedicated to children’s health.

Our fully accredited residency program offers a rich and supportive learning environment where residents can achieve—and exceed—the Royal College training requirements. Our residents are enthusiastic contributors to advocacy initiatives, research endeavours, and wellness activities. Undergraduate learners benefit from diverse learning opportunities, including neonatal care, outpatient clinics, and pediatric CTU experiences.

We are proud of several unique and important initiatives brought forth by our faculty, such as the CAYAK Clinic and the Janeway Lifestyle Program, which support long-term health outcomes for children. The Janeway Pediatric Research Unit continues to provide exceptional support for research projects and maintains an impressive record of scholarly productivity and meaningful scientific contributions.

I am immensely impressed with our faculty, residents, and learners, and of the work they do every day to improve the health of children and to ensure a bright, healthy future for the youngest members of our communities.
