Faculty Teaching Awards

The Faculty Teaching Awards recognize outstanding teaching by Junior and Senior faculty members in the Discipline of Pediatrics. Awards are based on the highest average teaching evaluation scores from undergraduate (UGME) and postgraduate (PGME) learners, reflecting excellence in teaching, engagement, and educational impact.

Outstanding Faculty Award for Distributed Site

This award recognizes outstanding faculty based at distributed training sites outside the St. John’s area, including New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Nominated by residents, the award honors faculty who provide high-quality teaching, mentorship, and meaningful clinical learning experiences, and who play a vital role in exposing residents to pediatric care across rural and regional settings.

The Competency-Based Education (CBD) Awards

Recognize faculty who demonstrate strong engagement in competency-based assessment and feedback, a cornerstone of learner development and progression.

The UGME Competency-Based Education (CBD) Award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate strong engagement in competency-based medical education within the undergraduate program. This award honors individuals who consistently complete learner evaluations and provide timely, meaningful feedback to medical students, supporting their development and progression. Recipients are selected based on learner evaluation data and chosen by the Clerkship Lead.

The PGME Competency-Based Education (CBD) Award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate excellence in competency-based education within the postgraduate program. This award honors faculty who consistently complete EPA assessments and provide effective, constructive feedback to residents, playing a critical role in resident development and competency progression. Recipients are selected based on evaluation data and chosen by the CBD Lead.

Together, these awards highlight the essential role faculty play in CBD through active participation in assessment, feedback, and learner coaching across the educational continuum.

Research Awards

The Discipline of Pediatrics Faculty Research Awards recognize outstanding research contributions by faculty members at different career stages. These annual awards honor excellence and impact in pediatric research, including peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications, research funding, mentorship, leadership, and other adjudicated scholarly work.

Faculty members are nominated and selected based on the quality and impact of their research contributions.

Faculty Quality Improvement Award 

The Faculty Quality Improvement Award recognizes faculty for outstanding contributions to Quality Improvement and/or Patient Safety. Recipients are nominated and selected based on the impact, rigor, and relevance of their quality improvement work.

Best Faculty Grand Rounds Award

Awarded annually to the faculty who presented the best Pediatric Grand Rounds Presentation. Winner is based on average of global score on evaluation forms.

Chair/Chief Excellency Award

This is an award decided on by the Discipline Chair and Clinical Chief, and given to a Pediatric Faculty member who has demonstrated sustained excellence over their career in patient care, collegiality, and teaching. 

2025: Dr. Mohammed Alam
A steady reassuring presence for patients. Generous with his time and always kind and respectful of colleagues. Never complains even when starting his day with three new patient consultations and a fully booked clinic. Regularly helps with teaching and student evaluations. He is the Pediatric neurologist we all love.

CPS Early Career Award

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Megan Burke and Dr. Liam Fardy for receiving the Canadian Pediatric Society Early Career Pediatrician Award. This national award recognizes outstanding contributions to pediatrics early in a clinician’s career, highlighting exceptional leadership, scholarship, advocacy, and commitment to child health. Their work reflects distinction in clinical care, professional engagement, and impact within the pediatric community. Congratulations to both Dr. Burke and Dr. Fardy on this well-deserved honor.
