SUBJECT: Local chapter of Engineers Without Borders ‘Bridge the Gap’ between Canada and Africa

DATE: Nov. 1

Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited help bridge the gap between Canada and the underdeveloped world. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is hosting a Bridging the Gap Barbecue on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 10:20 a.m.until 2:30 p.m. next to the clock tower on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus. Everyone is invited to help EWB symbolically bring Canada and the underdeveloped world closer together by physically building a bridge that connects Canada to Africa. For a small donation, participants can nail a plank into the connecting bridge to show their support.

Engineers Without Borders – MUN is a new organization on campus, joining 23 other Canadian university EWB chapters across the country in the fight against poverty. A registered Canadian charity, EWB helps people in developing communities gain access to technologies that will improve their lives. By working in rural communities in areas such as water and sanitation, food production and affordable energy, EWB has a lasting impact on the people who need help the most.

The Bridging the Gap Barbecue is one of many public outreach events planned by EWBthis fall. Volunteers will be active on campus and in the community promoting international development. They will also be fundraising to send one student overseas next summer where they will work in a developing community to help make its journey out of poverty easier. The MUN chapter has over 300 members and is looking for more. It is open to all Memorial students.
