SUBJECT: National engineering competition comes to St. John's
DATE: Feb. 25
Engineering students from across the country will be arriving on Thursday, Feb. 27, to compete in the 19th annual Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) hosted by the engineering students of Memorial's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Canadian Forces, this year's patron sponsor. The competition, set to begin at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre at 8 a.m. on Friday, will feature winners from the regional competitions held across Canada at the end of January. Memorial will be represented in the senior team design category by engineering students Adam Reid, Michael Ricketts, Susan Pike and Bradley Drover.
"Competing at the CEC will be a fantastic opportunity to show Canada how creative engineers from Memorial can be," said Adam Reid. "Our team is well-prepared for whatever surprises the competition throws our way, and we're looking forward to the challenge."
Starting on Friday, Feb. 28, 150 engineering students from 18 universities across Canada will be in St. John's to compete in the following categories: extemporaneous debate, explanatory communications, editorial communications, entrepreneurial design, corporate design, junior team design and senior team design. A complete schedule and overview of the competition categories is available at www.cec2003.cfes.ca.
"CEC 2003 will bring together the finest engineering students for the first time in St. John's, Newfoundland," Colin Clark, conference co-chair, said of the event. "We are looking forward to hosting such a prestigious event and welcoming fellow engineering students from across Canada to compete in a battle of words, intellect and imagination."
The competition gets underway on Friday morning with the junior and senior team design categories and continues until Saturday afternoon, concluding with extemporaneous debate. Starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a career fair in the lobby of the Delta Hotel. Fellow students and local companies are welcome to attend this excellent networking opportunity. An awards banquet will wrap up the competition on Saturday evening and announce the winners of this year's CEC.
The CEC sponsors include Canadian Forces (patron sponsor), Shell Canada, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, ABB, CAE, APEGN, Bombardier, Kiewet, Newfoundland Power, Hibernia Management, CN, NRC-CNRC, Newfoundland Hydro, Ontario Power Generation, EMS Technologies, Ikon, Norsk Hydro, Cathexis, CFES Café, Meloche Monnex, Creoscitex, and the Johnson Geo-centre.
