SUBJECT: Business Families Forum offers relevant advice on the art of family business

DATE: June 8

Building a successful business in today’s high speed global economy is not for the faint of heart. Juggling personal and family matters at the same time can be a challenge. However, combine the two in a family-run operation and you have a business dynamic that is unlike any other type of business, but the potential for success is great.

Recognizing the challenges that these family-run businesses face, Memorialniversity’s P. J. Gardiner Institute is launching its Business Families Centre (the Centre) on June 15, 2005. The Centre’s inaugural event is a half-day forum to be held from 8 a.m.–2 p.m.

The event is to be held on the fourth floor of the Businessdministration Building on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. Sessions will be held throughout the morning on family business topics including succession, governance, conflict resolution, and human resources. Business families and professional advisors are encouraged to attend.

Luncheon keynote speakers are Philippe and Nan-b de Gaspé Beaubien, former owners and operators of Telemedia, Inc., a privately owned media and communications company started in Montreal. The de Gaspé Beaubiens are well known for their expertise in the area of family business education, and in 1993, founded the Business Families Foundation.

The $150 fee includes a continental breakfast, nutrition break, lunch and on-campus parking.

The Business Families Centre is a source of information on family business development, governance, gender leadership, and entrepreneurship. The Centre will be the provincial focal point for those interested in advice, research, training and information on family-owned business.
