SUBJECT: Memorial University's business undergraduates succeed at national ICBC competition

DATE: Jan. 14

Five teams of undergraduate students from the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University competed against the country's brightest young businesspeople at a national competition held at Queen's University, in Kingston, Ont. The students were participating in the Intercollegiate Business Competition (ICBC) held this past weekend at Queen's School of Business.

Memorial's team took home a first-place finish in debating (Tom Dunne and John Whelan), two second-place finishes in accounting (Krista Andrews and Susan Kelly) and marketing (Krista Peddle and Laura Wellon), and a third-place finish in ethics (Chad Blundon and Jeffrey Young). The finance team (Brent Vallis and Robert Woolfrey) also participated in the final round.

The teams had been selected for the competition at Queen's after spending four weeks developing business case analyses that were submitted to the ICBC in mid-October. Twenty-nine universities competed in seven different subject areas (accounting, business policy, marketing, management of information science, labour arbitration, finance and ethics) for a spot at the finals in Kingston.

"Our success at this year's ICBC event extends the fine tradition that students from our faculty have in this competition," said coach Dr. Asmo Palasvirta, associate dean of undergraduate programs. "Over the past decade we have qualified teams to the final round 56 per cent of the time and 64 per cent of our qualifying teams finish in the top three. Our students are responsible for this success as they comport themselves well against the best competition in Canada and they deserve to be commended for their continued success."
