SUBJECT: Medicine at the Movies

Medicine at the Movies is a series of free films for the public, held for the first time this fall at Memorial University’s medical school. A film with a medical theme will be screened each evening, with a discussion before the film and a question and answer session after the screening facilitated by members of the Faculty of Medicine and/or filmmakers.

Time: Monday nights, Nov. 22 – Dec. 13, 7-9:30 p.m.

Location: Main Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Centre

Nov. 22: Dr. Jim Hutchinson

Movie: Outbreak (1995)

A deadly airborne virus finds its way into the USAand starts killing off people at an epidemic rate. Col. Sam Daniels' job is to stop the virus spreading from a small town, which must be quarantined, and to prevent an over-reaction by the White House.

Nov. 29: Dr. Fern Brunger

Movie: Wit (2001)

Based on the Margaret Edson play, Vivian Bearing is a literal, hardnosed English professor who has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. During the story, she reflects on her reactions to the cycle the cancer takes, the treatments, and significant events in her life.

Dec. 6: Dr. Robert Farrell

Movie: M*A*S*H (1970)

November, 1951. The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is shaken up by the arrival of Captains Hawkeye Pierce and Duke Forrest – crack surgeons but lousy soldiers. Joined by renowned chest-cutter Trapper John McIntyre, the surgeons set about dealing with the daily carnage of the war.

Dec. 13: Gerry Rogers

Movie: My Left Breast (2000)

Gerry Rogers, a filmmaker in Newfoundland, documents her personal battle with breast cancer. With her partner Peggy and lots of support from family and friends, she makes her way to recovery.
