SUBJECT: Noted philosopher to speak at Memorial University

Dr. John Sallis, Edwin Erle Sparks professor of Philosophy, PennState, will be on campus from Oct. 4-8, 2004. Dr. Sallis is widely recognized not only for his philosophical writings, but also for the broad range of his critical engagement with the arts, and painting in particular.

Dr. Sallis will be at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College on Monday, Oct. 4 where he will deliver a lecture entitled Art and Nature in the Work of Paul Klee. The lecture begins at 8 p.m., in room 224 of the Fine Arts Building

He will return to the St. John's campus on Tuesday, Oct. 5. from 4:30-6:00 pm, where he will address the master of Philosophy in Humanities and master of Arts in Philosophy students, discussing themes concerning history, memory and empire.

From 12 noon - 12:50, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, he will discuss The Theaetetus: A Reading with the Philosophy 3730 (Plato) class in A-2065. At 7:30 on Oct. 6, he will deliver the Henrietta Harvey Public lecture entitled Art and Nature in the Work of Paul Klee, in the Donald Cook Recital Hall. A reception will follow this lecture.

On Thursday, Oct. 7, Dr. Sallis will deliver a talk to the Department of Philosophy entitled Exorbitant Logic: At the Limit of the Metaphysics of Contradiction. This talk will take place at 2:00in A-2065.

On Friday, Oct. 8, at 12 noon, he will continue his discussion of The Theaetetus: A Reading with students of Philosophy 3730.
