SUBJECT: Harris Centre to host sustainable communities conference

This year’s joint North Atlantic Forum and Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation Conference will take place at the Emera Innovation Exchange at Memorial University’s Signal Hill Campus from Oct. 1-5.


Hosted by Memorial’s Harris Centre, the conference will bring together scholars from across the country and beyond to discuss topics such as rural tourism, climate change, employment and more.

The sessions will include keynote presentations and panel discussions on topics such as the future of work, rural food security and rural engagement. The conference will also host the national launch of the third edition of the State of Rural Canada Report.

Some highlights include the following:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 1-2 p.m.: The Future of Rural Work
     
  • Friday, Oct. 4, from 3:30-4:30 p.m.: The Senate Factor, a panel discussion with senators Robert Black, Ont.; Mary Coyle, N.S.; Diane Griffin, PEI; and Fabian Manning, N.L.
     
  • Saturday, Oct. 5, from 12-1:30 p.m.: The Irish Model of Regional Development
     
  • Saturday, Oct. 5, from 2:45-4 p.m.: The Theory, Practice and Potential of Regional Development: The Case of Canada

Dr. Sarah Minnes, post-doctoral fellow, University of Saskatchewan, and member of the State of Rural Canada’s editorial team, and Hannah Main, doctoral candidate, Dalhousie University, will introduce the State of Rural Canada report before the first keynote session at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2 and briefly discuss the importance of innovation for rural data collection in Canada.

All events will take place at Emera Innovation Hall, Signal Hill Campus, 100 Signal Hill Rd., in St. John’s.
All keynote and plenary panel discussions are open to the media.
