SUBJECT: Exploring cutting edge research relevant to the local engineering, technology and research community

DATE: Nov. 9

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers' (IEEE) provincial section will host the 27th Newfoundland Electrical and Computer Engineering Conference (NECEC) on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s.
Dr. Dennis Peters, head, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, says the faculty is pleased to support the conference and the local IEEE section.
“This conference provides opportunities to both academics and industry professionals to share their work and to keep abreast of innovative projects and the latest research,” he said. “It’s an excellent forum for sharing research with the wider community.”
Keynote speakers include Neil Riggs, industry expert, ocean engineering, and Bethany Downer, Newfoundland and Labrador’s first female astronaut candidate.
“We are excited to welcome our keynote speakers, who are explorers and adventurers in their respective fields and rely on electrical, electronic and computer engineering to achieve their goals,” said Jennifer Murray, the 2018 conference chair. “Mr. Riggs is an industry expert in ocean engineering, particularly remote operated underwater vehicles, while Ms. Downer is an aspiring astronaut who is also using social media and the Internet to make space news more widely accessible.”
Presenters will deliver papers on a wide range of topics, including image processing, instrumentation, power and alternative energy, ocean engineering, security and privacy, communications and networks, software engineering and remote sensing, among others.
In addition to the technical aspects, the conference is a networking and development opportunity for local electrical and computer engineering professionals and provides a space for the exchange of knowledge between academia and industry.
NECEC is grateful for the support of industry, including the 2018 conference sponsors, Cahill Group, the Electronics Centre, Newfoundland Power, PEG-NL, Surmount Consulting and Verafin.
Interested members of the university community or public can register online or on site the day of, but space is limited. The regular registration fee is $150 for IEEE members or $190 for non-members; the student registration fee is $85 for IEEE members and $100 for non-members. The fee includes conference attendance, proceedings on a CD, breaks and lunch.
