SUBJECT: Unlocking the mysteries of the universe with gravitational waves
DATE: Nov. 5
A professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology will explain how gravitational waves can unlock the mysteries of the universe at a public lecture this week at Memorial University.
Gravitational waves are subtle ripples in the fabric of space-time produced by catastrophic astrophysical events. Due to their small amplitude, their detection was thought to be impossible.
Recent discoveries have marked the opening of a new window on the universe and a new era of gravitational wave astrophysics, where gravitational waves produce new insights into black holes and neutron stars and may even reveal new objects.
Dr. Laura Cadonati’s public lecture, Seeing with New Eyes: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Universe with Gravitational Waves, takes place Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, room IIC-2001.
A reception will follow and limited free parking is available in lot 17. All are welcome.
