SUBJECT: Health-care profession camp for Indigenous students at Grenfell Campus

The Faculty of Medicine is hosting its second Healers of Tomorrow Gathering, a health career-focused camp offered to Indigenous students throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

The camp is taking place Aug. 13-20 at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, in Corner Brook.

Participants include high school students in grades 10-12 and students in first-year post-secondary studies. This year, the camp includes students from Nunavut as an extension to the Faculty of Medicine’s NunaFam program, an initiative between Memorial’s the Family Medicine Residency Program, the Government of Nunavut and Health Canada.

During the Healers of Tomorrow Gathering camp, students will have an opportunity to explore a variety of health careers with people working in these fields. Elders and healers from various Indigenous communities will also be present to teach about their cultures and medicines.

Hands-on simulation experience

Tuesday, Aug. 15, 1:50 p.m., Monaghan Hall

Simulation demonstrations where students will be able to practice medical procedures like suturing and see life-like mannequins that simulate a real patient.

Indigenous medicines

Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1:50 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 17, 1:50 p.m.

Students will spend time with elders and healers from various communities. They will hear about Indigenous culture and Indigenous views of health and well-being.

Funding for this program has been made possible through the International Grenfell Association, with support from the Faculty of Medicine and Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
