SUBJECT: Global Maritime Vryhof donation to enhance student learning experience at Marine Institute

Industry clients and students at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University’s Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) now have access to two new and unique learning tools for anchor handling training thanks to a donation from Vryhof.
The Vryhof virtual reality experience equips the institute with Vryhof’s Virtual Reality Moorings experience. It will enable students to walk on the seabed and inspect the moorings of different kinds of floaters by means of virtual reality glasses. The experience will be updated regularly to ensure students have the latest information on new equipment and installation procedures.
Vryhof is also providing scale model anchors (scale 1:36) replicating those typically used in a mooring line arrangement consisting of an anchor, five link adaptor, Global Maritime MoorLink chain swivel, studlink chain, chaser stopper and chaser. It is a scale, physical model similar to the anchors CMS trainees become familiar with in their simulation training.
“On behalf of the Fisheries and Marine Institute and the Centre for Marine Simulation, I want to thank Vryhof for their generous donation,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “This new equipment will provide our students and industry clients with an increased level of practical experience that they will be able to apply to their offshore work.”

“CMS is home to the Hibernia Offshore Operations Simulator Facility, which provides offshore operators with advanced and customized training for the supply and support of offshore facilities and production platforms,” said Christopher Hearn, director, Centre for Marine Simulation. “These new tools will provide students and clients with hands-on and virtual learning of mooring equipment used in the offshore, complementing the simulation training they receive.”
