SUBJECT: Memorial University offering power camps for young women

DATE: June 15

Power Camp St. John’s for Girls (ages 12-15), sponsored this summer by Memorial University’s Division of Lifelong Learning, is “a chance for young women to get together in a fun, safe environment to talk about their experiences and the kinds of issues that are very much in the forefront of their lives," says Ann Marie O'Keefe-Penney, the division’s Power Camp administrator. Power camps are fun, formative and definitely female-focused.

"Camp activities encourage the girls to think and talk about things like body image, self-esteem, peer pressure, gender discrimination and violence – particularly violence towards women – so they can make informed decisions about their future in the context of the issues raised.”

Ms. O'Keefe-Penney is quick to point out, however, that the emphasis is on having fun, and that discussion and exploration of those issues takes place through activities such as photography, video art, 'zine creation, self-defense classes and camping.

The Power Camp for 12-to-13-year-olds runs July 12-16. The camp for the 14-to-15-year-olds runs Aug. 9 - 13.
