REF NO.: 74
SUBJECT: New medical technologies to improve cancer imaging
DATE: April 5
Dr. William Whelan of the University of Prince Edward Island will present a public lecture on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus on optoacoustic imaging and spectroscopy, a new technology positioned to have a significant impact on cancer imaging.
According to Dr. Whelan, detecting cancer at its earliest stage remains a significant challenge. With optoacoustics, shining a pulsed laser light on cancer cells can create a symphony of sounds. By measuring the time delay between this “lightning and thunder,” one can locate a tumour inside the body and differentiate between normal and cancerous tissues, as well as treated and untreated tissues.
His lecture, Optoacoustic Imaging and Spectroscopy: Lightning and Thunder in Tissues, takes place Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. in the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, room IIC-2001. A reception will follow and free parking is available in lot 15B.
All are welcome.
