SUBJECT: Canadian climate change scientist co-hosting panel discussion at Memorial

DATE: April 15

A group of 60 scholars from across Canada has launched a report that provides a blueprint for Canada’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Acting on Climate Change: Solutions by Canadian Scholars proposes that the backbone of this transition lies with the electric interconnection between provinces. This interconnection will allow them to take full advantage of Canada’s enormous renewable energy potential – mainly hydro, wind and solar.

Dr. Catherine Potvin, Canada Research Chair in Climate Change Mitigation and Tropical Forests and a professor of biology at McGill University, is the lead author on the report.

Dr. Potvin will be at Memorial on Friday, April 17, at 4 p.m. for a Biology Graduate Student Association panel discussion.

The presentation, which will take place in the Science building (SN-2025), will explain the international context of the climate change negotiations and the genesis and key features of the report.

Dr. Potvin will be joined by two co-authors from Memorial University, Drs. Natalie Slawinski, Faculty of Business Administration, and Mark Stoddart, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, during the question period to discuss the need to brand environmental change in a positive way and the business case for climate change mitigation.
