SUBJECT: Sex Work: Soliciting Reflections
DATE: March 2
The members of Memorial University’s Department of Gender Studies believe it is important to encourage informed conversations about sex work. In this spirit, the department is hosting a three-day event March 5-7.
Sex Work: Soliciting Reflections will contribute to ongoing community dialogues through a series of activities with a town hall feel. It will create a space where university students and faculty as well as members of the St. John’s community can gather to learn about the realities of sex work, challenge old assumptions and participate in collective reflection. The public is welcome to attend all events.
Topics to be addressed include sex workers rights, the myths and realities of human trafficking and potential policy options for sex work in Canada.
Thursday, March 5 – Keynote address by Dr. Emily van der Meulen, Ryerson University, on Advancing a Sex-Work-is-Work Paradigm: Sex Workers’ Reflections on Laws and Labour in EN-2040, St. John’s campus, at 7 p.m.
Friday, March 6 – Critical Viewing of Buying Sex, moderated by Morgan Page, followed by student presentations in EN-1054, St. John’s campus, from 12-3 p.m.
Screenings of films by and with sex workers, including Scarlet Road: A Sex Worker’s Journey, moderated by Dr. Emily van der Meulen in the Rocket Room, 272 Water St., St. John’s, at 7 p.m.
Saturday, March 7 – Community Day at Marguerite’s Place, 170 Cashin Ave. Ext., St. John’s, from 1-5:30 p.m.
