SUBJECT: A Newfoundland Chinese family’s experience
DATE: Feb. 16
The Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University is featuring a public lecture, titled A Newfoundland Chinese Family’s Experience.
The event is part of an ongoing public engagement performance series: Check It Out! Celebrating Culture at the QEII Library and is part of Engage Memorial 2015.
To coincide with Chinese New Year, this event shines a spotlight on a personal and difficult account of the impact of the Chinese head tax imposed on the many Chinese immigrants who came to Canada in the early part of the last century.
Gordon Jin will tell his family’s struggles as they made Newfoundland and
Labrador their home. Librarian Dean Seeman will discuss the Digital Archives Initiative collection The Chinese Community in Newfoundland and have some archival gems on hand for display. Yaying Tu will perform traditional music on the Gu Zheng and Chinese snacks will be provided.
The event takes place on Wednesday, Feb.18, from 1-2 p.m. on the third floor of the QEII Library on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.
